About DistractShield
DistractShield is a focus tool for Windows and macOS that blocks distracting websites and applications during work sessions. You choose which apps and sites to allow (whitelist), and everything else gets blocked while you're in a focus session.
DistractShield uses a “whitelist“ approach to help you stay focused. Here"s how it works:
1. Whitelist vs Blacklist
- Rather than blocking distracting sites and apps (blacklist), you select only the ones you need (whitelist).
- During focus sessions, only whitelisted domains and applications remain accessible.
- All other sites and apps are automatically blocked to keep you distraction-free.
2. How Process Management Works
- Already running applications when you start a focus session will continue to run
- Only applications you have whitelisted will be allowed to launch new instances
- System applications and security software (like antivirus) are never blocked
3. Flexible Control
- Block sites and applications independently or together, depending on your needs.
- Tailor your focus session to different types of work:
- Studying: Allow browsers for seamless access to information.
- Coding: Enable development tools to streamline your workflow.
- Writing: Keep text editors accessible for distraction-free composition.
The whitelist approach means you only allow what you need, rather than trying to block everything you don't want. This can make it easier to stay focused since you're not constantly fighting against blocked sites.
